PSP60816 Advanced Diploma of Translating (English to Chinese) reflects the skills and knowledge required to translate special purpose texts from one language to another. Students will study various contextual areas that translators work in. They will be trained to apply effective linguistic transfer skills and discourse management strategies. Through classes, workshops and various guided group and individual learning activities, they will practise their translating skills, whilst also gaining an appreciation of professional ethics and industry knowledge that is essential to a future career.
Applicants must have:
- satisfactorily completed Year 12 of secondary education or its equivalent, or have appropriate and relevant experience and be at least 18 years of age
- an IELTS test result of 7.0 (Academic) OR pass a written entry test designed to assess the level of reading, comprehension and writing proficiency in both languages OR complete the Diploma of Translation with a score of at least 70% in Translation OR NAATI accreditation at the paraprofessional level in the relevant language and proven work experience.
- a native-like proficiency in a relevant LOTE language.
NB International applicants may gain entrance after completing the Diploma of Interpreting with a score of at least 70% or applicants may gain entrance to the course with a recognised Degree or Diploma in any discipline.
Articulation into programs in higher education may be possible from this Advanced Diploma upon approval from each individual university.
Students successfully finishing the Advanced Diploma course can gain freelance or contract employment in the public and private sectors as a professional translator in areas such as business, tourism, education, entertainment, government, security, migration, community, health and legal services.
In addition, many graduates may perform some translating as part of their principal duties in jobs requiring translating, bilingual and cross-cultural communication skills. In areas such as, health and community services, education, entertainment, banking, business, tourism, public relations, medical fields, law and foreign affairs.
NB Certain employment conditions, assignments and work roles may require practising translators and interpreters to have NAATI accreditation. This may be achieved through completion of a NAATI approved qualification at the standard required by NAATI, and/or, through NAATI testing. This course has received approval by NAATI. Students who successfully complete this course and achieve the relevant assessment marks will be recommended for NAATI Accreditation as Professional Translator (English into Chinese).
